LANA FINALLY GOT THE last of the boxes packed into the pod that sat outside her townhouse. She’d have it locked up and kept there for as long as she could until she decided what to do next. After the way she left things with Kayden on the phone a few days ago, she was unsure if any of its contents would make it back to Georgia at all. Just then, her phone chimed, and she looked at the screen. It was Jake Washington, Sam’s brother who worked for the feds.

She had no intentions of taking Sam up on the offer at first, but the nagging feeling in the pit of her stomach wouldn’t stop. There was more to Maureen’s story and she needed more information. When Lana spoke with him on the phone, she explained in as much detail as she could about what Maureen had told her. Jake was sure to explain that he couldn’t make any promises but would see what he could dig up about the people involved.

That was yesterday, and the turnaround was faster than she anticipated. She stared down at the text message and wasn’t sure if she wanted to read the update. Deciding it could wait until she got inside, Lana pushed the phone back into her pocket.

As she turned around to walk back into the house there stood Kayden. On her porch, his steely eyes searing into hers.

How the hell did he get here without me seeing him, she thought to herself as she took a step towards him. Her heart raced, her hand trembled, she needed to be near him.

A smile stretched across her face, as she sprinted across the lawn and jumped into his arms. Their bodies crashed together as he lifted her, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. They held onto one another for what felt like eons and she buried her face in the crook of his neck, inhaling the familiarity of him. Finally, she moved her head and met his eyes, leaning her forehead into his.

“What are you doing here?” Lana asked, wanting to press her lips to his and never stop.

“I told you. I was coming for you, Mrs. Capshaw,” he replied, placing a small delicate kiss on the tip of her nose.

The warmth of his lips sent shockwaves through her body down to the pit of her stomach, as she leaned down and kissed his supple lips. She wanted to explain to him that her feelings on the matter was unchanged but couldn’t form the words at that moment. All she wanted to do was take him inside and show him physically how much she loved and needed him. She kissed him then, her heart striking against her chest. Their kiss became almost too intense, but not enough at the same time.

Kayden pulled away, “We have to talk, Lana,” he breathed heavily.

“Not right now, please. I don’t want to think about anything. Not your mother, not Kim, nothing.”

She kissed him again and claimed his lips as hers and he didn’t resist.
